　　I learnt to write to you in happier days,
. C) S% P( D' m  b% J　　And every letter was a piece I chipped
# j( i7 d& e* _; X! j　　From off my heart, a fragment newly clipped
6 b) F! {! S+ V/ o, Y" p! B　　From the mosaic of life; its blues and grays,
$ y. O% _" g4 N) Q　　Its throbbing reds, I gave to earn your praise.
　　To make a pavement for your feet I stripped
　　My soul for you to walk upon, and slipped
( N: @! u/ o8 h2 B6 Q3 z　　Beneath your steps to soften all your ways.
6 M* p$ j/ [1 H* _* A5 X% j; p6 ]　　But now my letters are like blossoms pale
2 x' `) c4 w5 ]: G+ v. U. F　　We strew upon a grave with hopeless tears.
* ^8 ~* v0 s4 ]  e2 f/ e　　I ask no recompense, I shall not fail
　　Although you do not heed; the long, sad years
　　Still pass, and still I scatter flowers frail,
　　And whisper words of love which no one hears.
